Introduction to the Art of Sculpting with Bernard Springsteel: 7/11 - 7/12

Bas Relief is a two dimensional sculpture. It is on a flat surface picture with a volume of mass rising out of the surface. It can be very simple or extremely detailed with objects rising in high relief. A classic example is the Bernini doors in Italy.

Bas Relief is an excellent introduction to the medium of sculpting. Since it reduces the complications of a figure in the round, it is much easier to cast because the finished product is one mold instead of multi-piece molds such as when you sculpt a statue in the round.

Workshop Description:

The focus of this sculpture class is to acquaint participants with the medium of clay sculpting.  The bas-relief style and the box method allow one to produce a finished work in a two-day workshop.

The clay used is similar to terra cotta and does not have to be baked.  The student will be shown how to handle the medium; how to use the sculpting tools that are included in the class; and then how to prepare the bas relief for hanging .Art-sculpting tools will be included in the supplies for you to keep. A live model will be provided as well as materials and clay.
